Space travel couldn’t get any fancier now that Adidas Y-3 has agreed to design a brand new line of clothes and footwear for Branson’s brainchild. Adidas designed space duds for Virgin Galactic, showing that you can be sleek and elegant even in space.
- Adidas has sought the help of Yohji Yamamoto, a Japanese fashion designer;
- Virgin Galactic has struck a deal with Adidas Y-3 for the space duds;
- Virgin’s intent is to promote the idea of space tourism;
- The new garments will be worn by pilots, astronauts and even civilians;
- The new duds feature a sleek black design;
- Virgin Galactic has decided to drop the red, white and purple emblem;
- The clothes are made using Nomex Meta aramid composition, very similar to Kevlar.
So, we ask again, why does space travel have to be so sterile in terms of fashion? This is probably what Virgin had in mind when they’ve decided to partner up with Adidas Y-3. In turn, Adidas turned towards Yohji Yamamoto, a famous Japanese fashion designer.
Adidas and Yamamoto now have their hands full, so to say, because they’re planning on changing our perspective regarding the concept of space apparel. And it would seem that the joint team was successful in performing the task.
Recently Y3 came up with a few prototypes, which they’ve decided to showcase at Virgin’s Spaceport America, located at the New Mexico facility. The new line of space apparel doesn’t look only cool, but it is also functional.
According to Adidas, all the samples presented at the makeshift fashion show, are weaved with a special material called Nomex Meta Aramid. This type of material has basically the same properties as Kevlar, although it doesn’t pack the same rigidity as the popular bullet-proof material.
The suits are also flame resistant, comfortable, yet durable. Adidas said that these are the perfect duds for long-term missions, were the pilots will have to remain in seemingly uncomfortable positions for a very long time.
Adidas designed space duds for Virgin Galactic, hoping that they can improve the idea of space travel. When designing the new line of spacesuits, Y-3 decided to drop Virgin’s emblematic pallets of colors and to go along with a sleek and elegant black.
Besides the line of clothes, the company was also responsible for designing a new line of footwear for pilots and astronauts. The new boots are basically made from the same material as the duds. Made from high-quality leather, the boots packed special grips and heel insertions, which ensure that the feet are protected from sudden shocks.
