Colo , the first gorilla born in a zoo will turn 58 today and her birthday celebrations is to be broadcast live to online viewers.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in a statement said their female western lowland gorilla named Celo will be celebrating her 58th birthday on Monday. Colo will be feted with an Ohio-shaped cake made of peanut butter, applesauce, honey, shredded carrots with Greek yogurt frosting.
The video of Colo receiving the cake and opening her presents of tomatoes and Clementines is available on the Zoo website. The video also shows Colo frolicking with zoo staff and visitors.
Colo is the oldest gorilla alive in any Zoo. Colo was born in the Zoo in 1956. Colo is a mother of three and her family tree encompasses more than two dozen descendants living at zoos across the country. Colo was the first gorilla which was born in captivity.
The live stream of Colo’s birthday party begins at 1:30 p.m. today. The live feed will be preceded by a half – hour video about her life and will be followed by Colo receiving her cake and presents from Zoo workers and visitors.
Audra Meinelt, assistant curator of the zoo’s Congo Expedition said, “She knows the whole day is about her. She’ll get a cake, and she’ll get presents to open — wrapped boxes with a few extra treats like mixed nuts and clementines.”
It is for the second year in a row that Colo’s birthday is being streamed live across the world for her adoring fans. According to Patty Peters, a zoo spokeswoman, last year, people from every corners of the world except Antarctica were witness to Colo’s birthday bash.
Meinelt who has cared Colo for more than 18 years and said that every year the world’s best-known western lowland gorilla survives is a gift. Female gorillas live typically for 37 years and the western lowland gorillas are critically endangered.
