Google+, Google’s social network, will have a new feature called Collections. The purpose of this new tool is to help organizing and sharing articles, pictures, videos and other contents related to particular topics or interests such as movies, food, space or nature.
The company announced this new feature in a Google+ post:
“Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.”
In the Google+ post it was mentioned that every collection is a set of posts focused on a particular topic. This enables users to organize their interests in an easy way. Google+ users have the option to choose whether they want to share their collections publicly or with a custom set of people. They also have the possibility of keeping their collections private. After you create your first collection a new tab will be displayed on your profile and people will be able to find and follow your collections.
In their Home stream users will see posts from the collections which they follow. There is also a link which easily redirects you right into collections so you can check similar contents from the same author. According to the search giant this is a great way to discover more of the things you are interested in from the people you follow. Collections is available on web and Android and it will soon arrive on iOS.
The new Collections feature is very similar to the rival social network Pinterest. The network has a private owner and in March it was valued at $11 billion. In the past year and a half Pinterest has tripled its value. So Google may be right to want to go after Pinterest.
The introduction of this new feature is one of the first moves after head of the project Vic Gundotra left last year. David Horowitz, the new head of service, intends to separate Google+ features in the future, particularly Photos since this feature is one of the most popular ones of the service. The process has begun and photos already appear in Google Drive.
Google is trying to refresh its social media network by attracting new users since it has not been much of a success ever since it was launched. Introducing this new feature is not something surprising since Google+ is a combination of other social media networks like Facebook, Flickr, WhatsApp and now Pinterest.
