The topic concerning male contraceptives has been long discussed, and soon a male contraceptive gel may be ready to be used. This new type of contraception might make all men cringe. The treatment presupposes the use of a gel which gets injected into man’s testicles, blocking sperm. This new type of contraception treatment is bound to have the effects of a vasectomy.
- Specialists developed a new contraceptive treatment for men.
- Vasalgel is a male contraceptive gel that is injected into male’s testicles, more specifically, into vas deferens.
- This gel is bound to stop the sperm flow, preventing an unwanted pregnancy.
Vasalgel is the new product which is a polymer gel that gets injected into the vas deferens. The vas deferens represents the valve that carries sperm to the penis. The contraceptive is bound to prevent sperm from passing through that tube. Nevertheless, Vasagel is very different from a vasectomy because the tube is cut. The new treatment can be flushed out or reversed with a syringe of a baking soda solution.
New research funded by the Parsemus Foundation has revealed that the new treatment can be modified, this company has purchased the firm which develops the male contraceptive gel. Researchers had analyzed the progress of 7 rabbits which received this treatment for 14 months before they discovered how to flush out the gel. Scientists unveiled that after the process was reversed, the sperm flow returned in all animals.
Dr. Donald Waller, the lead author of the study, claimed that the outcomes of the reversibility of the treatment suggested that the gel implant could be removed and the sperm flow would come back to normal. The lead author stated that after reversibility, researchers were pleased to see that the motility and number of sperm did not appear to be different from the baseline results.
The motility of the sperm refers to how sperm moves in a semen sample, representing one of the most important parameters during a semen analysis. To remove all the gel, more flushing may be needed during reversal. If there remain gel traces in the vas, then the characteristics of the sperm may be damaged.
Specialists explain that there are few male contraceptive options for the moment. Mainly, couples still rely on contraceptives for women. Nevertheless, the side effects of contraceptives which contain hormones usually appear to be unpleasant, and women tend to become stressed or irritated.
