The US Surgeon General has provided more information regarding the opioid addiction. He has announced the development of a plan to overcome drug and alcohol abuse, especially opioid abuse. He is raising awareness for doctors, patients, and authorities to boost the efforts of combating the health care crisis in the US.
- Doctors should be aware of the effects a certain medicine might have upon its patients.
- The cases of opioid addiction began to be increase due to wrongfully used prescriptions.
A lot of medical advisors have questioned and blamed the prescription of painkillers like Vicodin or Oxycontin which are unsuitable if regularly used. Thus, they have also offered a wide range of alternative solutions to manage pain. The US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy has underlined the report called “Facing Addiction in America,” expressing his view which claims that addiction is a disease, not a moral misjudgment.
His survey has accurate descriptions and details of how the proper medical intervention and all addiction treatments may help anybody extinguish any substance dependence. He asserted that healthcare providers do not use these methods enough to help every addicted person, thus being the case that 1 out of 10 individuals received the necessary treatment to successfully eradicate addiction.
Murthy’s report focuses on alcohol dependence, aiming to develop an analysis on the misuse of pills, targeting the reduction of opioid addiction. He asked for the need of immediate action upon this matter, requesting for the help of every doctor who needs to be responsible for the prescription he or she gives to his or her patients. It is terrible who doctors themselves manage to determine their patients to become addict to a dangerous pill.
Doctors need to ask themselves if the benefits of recommending a particular medicine manage to the outcome the damages it could provoke so that they could decide how necessary that pill is in treating their patient. Is the patient subjected to other risks? Is there a probability of developing an addiction?
Murthy advised every caregiver, doctor or medical professional to adopt the opioid recommending guideline implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Marvin M. Lipman, who is a chief medical adviser for Consumer Reports, asserted that any doctor might misinterpret the idea of doing no harm which is thought to be on the same path with the idea of relieving the pain. There is a slight difference which could make a great difference for your patient.
