A pitbull refused to be adopted by families for five years has been saved by Facebook. The picture of the dog posted on the social media platform, has touched thousands of hearts and many have offered to adopt him.
The internet has showed us many times it can be a miracle worker and this time it again made a difference. It just shows what solidarity among people can do to save a life. This time, it was the life of Chester, a six years old pit bull.
Chester has spent his last five years living in dog shelters. When he was first picked up from the street, he was assigned to the Riverhead Animal Shelter and after a few years he was moved to the North Fork Animal Welfare League. That was the place that he used to call home home for the last moths. In spite of his friendly nature, the dog couldn’t find anyone to adopt him and families refused him every time.
The people working at the shelter didn’t know what else to do to help Chester find a family until the manager of the place, Gabby Stroup came up with the idea to create a Facebook page for him to help him find a loving home.
The results of what started as a simple initiative went viral. The animal shelter started to receive thousands of calls and messages from people living in all the corners of the world asking for Chester.
What created the insane responses was the picture that was uploaded on the Facebook page. In the picture you can see Chester holding in his mouth a piece of carton on which it was written a heartbreaking message, which was a short presentation of Chester’s sad situation, asking why doesn’t anybody want him?
The manager of the shelter was completely shocked by how many people responded to the message and shared the page. In just a few hours the photo had been shared 6,000 times and after someone suggested her to make his own Facebook page, so she did.
In less than one day the page hit 4,385 likes. By the next day they had received more than 300 emails and the phone wouldn’t stop ringing. There were people calling from all around the corners of the world and many of them couldn’t contain their tears while they were talking on the phone.
However, it seems that Chester’s family was already written in the stars. Stroup told that she was called by a woman named Dana, who asked her a few questions about the dog, after she saw his picture on Facebook. After they finished talking, Dana told her that she has to consult with her family and she will be back.
The next day, Dana, together with her husband Adi and their sons, came to the shelter to meet Chester. Witnesses claim they were perfect for one another from the moment they laid eyes on each other. The people at the shelter just couldn’t believe that after so many years Chester was finally wanted by a family.
Those who saw the event say there was an instant connection between them, and Dana’s husband had tears in his eyes when he met Chester for the first time. The morning when the family came to pick him up for good, Chester was so happy that he started kissing all of them, stated Stroup.
The new owners of Chester have had two dogs before, Yorkies who have died five years ago, exactly the same period of time that Chester has been for his loving family. Dana and his family truly believe that the reason no one wanted him, was because he was waiting for them to come get him. Another touching sign that she said was proof that Chester was her dog, was his name, as the grandfather she never had the chance to met, was named Chester.
Dana admitted that before deciding to take Chester, she had a discussion with her two sons, who have been constantly telling her that they want a dog. Once they met Chester there was no way of going back.
Chester left for his new home with his own personal bag where the people from the shelter put all his favorite toys. But he didn’t leave before he said goodbye to everybody there.
When the family walked out the shelter, Dana stated that Chester saved them and considers that his warm loving behaviour is also due to the great treatment he has received at the shelter.
The success of Chester’s adoption trough social media, has inspired other animal associations to create pages with their animals hoping that they will also find the loving home they are hoping for and Stroup said that she will use Chester’s page for the adoption of another dog.
