The recent cyber attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment has been described as unprecedented and its uniqueness meant that there was no precedent. So it was almost impossible to stop or to be prepared for it.
Lynton added, “The scope of this attack differs from any we have responded to in the past, as its purpose was to both destroy property and release confidential information to the public. The bottom line is that this was an unparalleled and well planned crime, carried out by an organized group, for which neither SPE nor other companies could have been fully prepared.”
The missive was sent just one day after the cyber terror group which called itself Guardians of Peace carried out the attack. In a poorly written e-mail, the group threatened Sony Pictures employees and their families with harm.
Guardians of Peace hacking venture was first carried out on November 24 when personal details of Sony Pictures Employees were released. The details included workers’ salary data and Social Security numbers. The group also leaked several Sony films which has not been released and includes contemporary remake of Annie which is scheduled to be released in the coming festive season.
The FBI is still investigating the GOP hack and is following several leads. This also includes the possibility of the cyber attack having originated in North Korea. It could be a reaction to the Seth Rogen comedy The Interview, which is based upon a fictional assassination plot against the North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un.
