Everybody is stressed sometimes. No matter if you have a hard job or your family is causing you a headache, stress affects us every day. Some people know how to handle stress while others find comfort in food or in bad habits. A new study shows that the place where you live might also influence your stress level.
- The most stressed state in the US is Alabama.
- Minnesotans are the least stressed people in the country.
- This study was conducted by researchers from WalletHub.
- All 50 states were analyzed.
WalletHub managed to conduct the study that shows which are the most and the least stressed states in the US. The most stressed state is Alabama while the least stressed is Minnesota. This research shows that stress can be influenced by many factors, from job security to parental choices.
The Findings Of This Study
In order to determine the levels of stress in different states, researchers examined a sample of individuals from each location. They took into consideration 4 parameters related to family, safety, health, and work. 33 metrics were developed. Each of them had a grading of 100 maximum. This way, researchers analyzed the data from all states.
Some of these 33 metrics include parental choices, job security, work hours, and childcare costs. In order to get a better look at the problem researchers also checked information from the CDC and US Census. After all of these tests and information were collected and analyzed, researchers calculated the results for every state.
Alabama vs Minnesota
The findings showed that Alabama is the most stressed state in the US. The overall score of this state was 56.91. Here, researchers found the biggest number of people with bad health. Alabama is also home to few psychologists, the fewest in the country, actually.
It was also revealed that, in this state, people sleep a lot less than people in other states. Also, the most stressed state had very poor credit scores. All in all, Alabamans are not very happy people, many of them complained about their high level of stress.
On the opposite pole, Minnesota was revealed as the least stressed state. The score of the state was 31.07. In this state, few people suffer from poor health and psychologists were not as scarce as in Alabama. Another interesting finding showed that the rate of divorce in this state was a small one. After Minnesota came Iowa and North Dakota, proving that geography might also play a significant role in how happy – or unhappy – Americans are.
This study showed that people who live in southern states are more likely to be stressed. In the Middle American states people have jobs that are paid better and therefore the level of stress is smaller.
