A recent study has warned of the possibility of babies becoming exposed to high levels of a phthalate called DEHP in medical equipment.
Researchers in the US have warned of the possibility of premature babies getting exposed to increased levels of dangerous chemicals in plastic. Often premature babies are connected to life saving equipments of which plastic is a major component. These plastics could contain high levels of phthalate called DEHP. The study is already having its effects and UK has ordered an enquiry on phthalate use in devices.
Some US health care providers have already banned the use of DEHP in medical equipments. The evidence on the safety of phthalates in humans has been uncertain, but European regulators have classified DEHP as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
Premature as well as new born babies are at highest risk of exposure to DEHP since they are dependent on a number of life supportive medical devices.
