A woman aged 67 went to a hospital in West Midlands, UK, to have a check-up and decide upon a cataract surgery. However, during the procedure, doctors discovered an odd solidified mass in her eye. This foreign object turned out to be 27 contact lenses trapped inside.
- The woman went to the hospital to get a cataract surgery.
- During the surgery, doctors found an accumulation of foreign mass in her right eye.
- They discovered this mass was made up of 17 contact lenses stuck together, followed by 10 more hidden in the eye.
Doctors at Solihull Hospital were amazed to discover the routine surgery could not go as planned. While performing the operation, they stumbled upon an accumulation of mass with a bluish hue trapped in the woman’s right eye.
After close observation, they established these were 17 contact lenses kept close together by mucus. Doctors continued the procedure and found 10 more contact lenses hidden in the same eye. Therefore, the cataract turned out to be something else.
The patient had been wearing contact lenses for 35 years. Due to the vision problems she had been experiencing with her right eye, and the fact that her eyes were “deep set”, she ended up ‘capturing’ so many contact lenses she wore over the years.
Doctors said they had never seen a similar case before. Also, they were surprised how the woman couldn’t feel that a foreign object was stuck in her eye. Such a big accumulation of mass should have irritated her eye, and it is odd she couldn’t tell something was not right. However, the woman thought the discomfort was due to old age.
This should teach everybody to take better care of their contact lenses, and go on regular check-ups to their optometrist. It sometimes happens that one or two lenses get stuck, but never so many. Therefore, each time you feel pain or discomfort in your eye, go see a doctor.
