The remains of at least four bodies were discovered behind a strip mall nearby a wooden area in Connecticut. According to the police the place seems to be the dumping ground of a serial killer who is assumed to have committed seven murders.
On Monday Kevin T Kane, Chief Attorney of Connecticut, revealed that the remains of the four victims were identified in the city of New Britain in Hartford County after being dug up from a marshy wooden region. In 2007 other partial skeletons of three women were discovered in the same place. The women were identified as Joyvaline Martinez (23), Mary-Jane Menard (40) and Diane Cusack (53). According to James Wardwell, New Britain Police Chief the place is a burial site.
He also said that the three women had substance abuse problems and were known for going often to the same downtown neighborhood in New Britain. Martinez had been seen for the last time in October 2003. She was living with her mother and was unemployed. Her relatives became worried when she did not show up for her birthday party. Menard disappeared in October as well.
Authorities did not reveal the name of the suspect, but stated that the person responsible for the murders is in custody so there is no threat to the public. If the theory regarding the serial killer proves to be true this case could rival that of the most notorious killer in Connecticut, Michael Ross. Ross admitted that he slayed eight females from New York and Connecticut in the 1980s. In 2005 he was put to death. This was the first execution in New England’s history in decades.
Ever since 2007 when the first skeletons were found investigators have been returning to that place every year looking for further victims. The newly-found remains were discovered by an FBI dog. The victims were seen for the last time in 2003. One of the women was identified as Melanie-Ruth Camilini. She was from Seymour and had two children.
Mary Jane Menard’s son, Brian McKinney, said that it is sad that other families have to go through the same pain when they discover that their loved ones were killed, but he feels relieved that this won’t happen again. Kane remarked:
“Now they have some answers, but the answers that they have aren’t good, either. And that’s what I hope people pay attention to today, how sad this really is.”
