Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest threats of our century. Although medical discoveries are made every year, there is still no cure for this disease. Well, at least until now, as researchers said there is hope: they found a treatment that slows the progression of the disease.
- Researchers said they might find the treatment for Alzheimer’s. It is not sure if the disease can be cured, but doctors can slow it down.
- We are hoping that the scientists will succeed and that we will have a treatment for this terrible disease.
How did they manage to see if the treatment really works? A good example is David Johnson, who is now 59 years-old. He was not surprised when he has diagnosed with this disease four years ago as he began to forget members of his family, including his father. He resigned and went to a clinical trial in Sacramento, where this new treatment was given to him. After almost five years, his disease has not progressed. The doctors said it is too soon to confirm if the treatment really works, but we now for sure that it slowed down the disease.
If the treatment will succeed, that would mean one of the important medical discoveries in the history. There are hundreds of clinical trials who try to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia. Researchers promised us that some of those therapies are in their final phases and they have promising results. We really hope to see results in the near future and, who knows, maybe this disease will have a treatment in a few years.
It seems that in the last five years, spending on this disease’s research has doubled, which means that people are more aware of the danger Alzheimer’s can be. But researchers think this is not enough. There should be betterer treatments to prevent the delay and this means more money and more trials. Alzheimer is an age-related disease. It appears at the age of 65 or older, but this is not a rule. Compared with other diseases, such as cancer or heart disease, it gets a lot less funding.
However, there are many researchers who try their best in finding the treatment the whole world is waiting for. If they find a way to slow the progression, the number of cases and cost will be cut almost in half. We do not lose our hopes as the scientists promised us to find a cure. Moreover, now Alzheimer’s can be diagnosed 10 to 15 years before symptoms begin to show, which is a real help for people around the world. We still have hope.
