Specialists argue that during the cold season, animals should receive extra care. Extreme cold temperatures can seriously affect pets’ state of health, putting them in danger. Some experts from the American Veterinary Association claimed that pets should be kept indoors , while farm animals need attentive care, protection from extreme temperatures and access to water.
- During winter, every pet owner should keep their beloved pets inside.
- If one cannot keep their dog inside, they they should provide a warm shelter.
- During the cold season, pet owners are advise to take shorter walks with their dogs to protect their state of health.
People generally believe that cats and dogs are even more resistant than us when it comes to freezing temperatures due to their fur. This is a false belief that may jeopardize the lives of your pets if you do not listen to experts’ advice. Cats and dogs can also by threatened by hypothermia when exposed for an extensive period of extremely cold temperatures.
That is why researchers advise people to keep their beloved pets inside, making sure that they are safe. However, if we were to think about dogs adapted to colder climates like Huskies, which have thick fur or long hair, they are more tolerant when it comes to low temperatures. Nevertheless, no pet should be left outside during cold weather for extended periods of time.
If some people cannot keep their dog inside during winter, at least they should build them a robust and warm shelter to keep them safe during a blizzard and below freezing temperatures which can affect their state of health. What is more, you should always take care of them having access to fresh water, not ice or snow. You can purchase one of those pet-safe bowls which maintain the temperatures of the water.
Owners need to make sure that the shelter’s floor is not at the same level with the ground, being protected from the cold ground, avoiding losing their body heat into the soil. The shelter should be equipped with a thick warm and dry bedding which should be regularly changed. The refuge’s door needs to be positioned in such a way to prevent winds from getting inside. Make sure you provide your favorite pet extra care.
What is more, pet owners should avoid using heat lamps or space heaters to avoid the high risks of a bursting fire. Instead, one can use a heated pet mat, but also with caution because these also pose a risk of burns. When it comes to dogs only, every owner should think about shorter outside walks to protect both of you from the cold weather.
