A California woman was injured by a dolphin while on a boat trip with her loved ones. The family was quietly stalking some playful dolphins when one of them put the scare in them.
Chrissie Frickman and her husband Drik were quietly enjoying a boat trip off the Coast of Orange County with their two kids on June 21. The date was of double importance to them, as besides Father’s Day, it was also the 18th anniversary of their wedding day.
They had thought themselves safe inside their 21-foot cruising boat so they though there would be no harm in getting up close and personal with a nice group of dolphins they spotted in the distance. Yet, as they got closer and closer, the dolphins became visibly excited, as they often do around humans, and started doing small tricks and jumps on the surface of the water.
The cheering family was enchanted by the show, watching from the ledge of the boat at the leaping dolphins. Chrissie remembers this and says it was one of the most enchanting and beautiful things that she had seen, as the dolphins jumped higher and higher, looking like they were “falling out of the sky.”
Then it happened. Before they managed to grasp what was happening, one of the dolphins jumped so high that it hit the boat’s railing, after which it came crashing onto the boat. Like fish out of the water normally do, the dolphin too began to twist and bend frantically, desperately trying to breathe.
In its struggle the 350-pound animal injured his nose and his tail, letting blood splash all over, making the scene all the more gruesome. With its sudden movements, the dolphin knocked over Chrissie, breaking both her ankles, afterwards brushing the little girl and closely missing the boy.
After the husband managed to pull his wife from under the distressed mammal, he set course for the dock. Meanwhile he was splashing water onto the dolphin so as to keep him alive. When they reached the shore, several deputies managed to take hold of the animal and let him back into the water.
The story ended okay as the dolphin ran off only a bit bruised and Chrissie is recovering in the hospital. Though, this moment will definitely be one to remember for the Frickman family.
