A new study shows that certain antibiotics increase the risk of miscarriage. This new research focuses more on the early stage of pregnancy. The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Researchers discovered that women who take common antibiotics have a 60% odd to increased risk of miscarriage.
- Antibiotics increase the risk of spontaneous abortion;
- Older women with health problems have a higher risk of miscarriage;
- Not all antibiotics increase this risk: Penicillin and nitrofurantoin are safe;
- Pregnant women should avoid macrolides, metronidazole, and tetracyclines.
The antibiotics that increase the risk of miscarriage include quinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, metronidazole, and tetracyclines. Fortunately, the researchers did not find a link between an increased risk of miscarriage and other common antibiotics like nitrofurantoin and penicillin. These antibiotics are used to treat urinary tract infection in women who are pregnant.
“..our investigation shows that certain types of antibiotics are increasing the risk of spontaneous abortion, with a 60 percent to twofold increased risk,” mentioned Anick Berard, one of the researchers.
This study is based on data from women that participated in the Quebec Pregnancy Cohort from 1998 to 2009. Researchers identified more than 8,700 cases of miscarriage. The spontaneous abortions occurred after 14 weeks of pregnancy. The age of the participants ranged from 15 to 45.
The researchers took into account the age of the women, their other health problems, and their relationship status. It was observed that older women with multiple health problems and who lived alone had a higher risk of spontaneous abortion. Health experts mentioned that untreated infections can also lead to miscarriage.
Researchers mentioned that women should first try alternative treatments before they use antibiotics. This could cure the infection and lower the risk of spontaneous abortion. Scientists also said that the findings of this study can help pregnant women and doctors to avoid the common antibiotics that can increase the risk of spontaneous abortion.
The best news, however, is that not all antibiotics increase this risk. This means doctors should focus more on the drugs and antibiotics that are both safe and effective for women. All in all, the study shows that the most vulnerable to these antibiotics are women in an early stage of pregnancy.
What is your opinion about this study? Did you know that antibiotics can be dangerous during pregnancy?
