The miracle of birth should be one of the most wonderful moments in a person’s life, but in some cases fate, or God, or just the laws of probability decide against it. In some cases tragedy occurs, and that could have very well been the case for a family in Jacksonville, Florida, as conjoined twin goes home after one year, brother hopefully following soon.
- Conjoined births generally occur in one out of somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 births
- Carter and Connor were born conjoined at the abdomen, sharing a small intestine, and with fused livers
- The twins were the first conjoined birth at the UF Health Jacksonville hospital
- They were conjoined for 13 months before Carter started showing signs of improper nutrition
- Connor went home, while Carter will remain in the hospital for a bit longer
Pretty much everything about the case of the two Florida twins was either rare or just new to the people confronted with them.
The two were born conjoined at the abdomen in the Floridian UF Health Jacksonville hospital, and constituted not only the first conjoined case in the 60 year history of the place, but also the first case in which the separation was attempted.
After being conjoined for over a year – 13 months, to be exact – the doctors decided to finally separate the twins after one of them – Carter, started losing the battle for nutrition, and his life risked being threatened.
So instead of the team risking losing him, they decided to start the operation.
The team that performed the very exhausting separation process consisted of over 200 doctors and medical assistants, and it took more than just a few surgeries to finish it.
One of the lead pediatric surgeons declared that while he is glad that one of the boys – Connor – finally made it home, the whole staff is going to miss him.
The second brother, Carter, was more sickly and weighed 6 pounds less than his brother, and is going to remain in the hospital for a bit longer before finally going home.
The mother is going to remain in the hospital with Carter, while the father has already taken Connor home and is excited to start hanging out with his son.
The parents haven’t really ad time to see each other since the ordeal began, as the kids’ mother stayed in the hospital with the twins, while the father worked two jobs in order to afford the bills.
