A recent study reveals that eye lenses are not as beneficial for your eye sight as you thought they were. It may be very comfortable to wear them, as you can say goodbye to that double pair of eyes you must take care of but they carry a large amount of bacteria that does more harm than good.
According to the research conducted at NYU Langone Medical Center, those of us who wear contact lenses have a triple amount of certain microorganisms on the surface of their eyes, compared to people who wear regular glasses. The Annual Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology outlined the findings, triggering an alarm signal for all of us who are used to wear eye lenses on a daily basis.
To strengthen the results, scientists compared the bacterial community on the surface of people’s eyes and they found that the structure and composition of bacteria on the eye lenses wearers’ eyes are more resembling with the bacteria on the eyelids, which is a foreign microorganism that must stay away from the iris and the pupils. Non-wearers are much less exposed to such microbes, thus own a healthier ocular globe.
However, this research needs to dig deeper into the matter and conclude whether the changes and shifts in eye bacteria could come from the fingers we use to touch the eye or whether the pressure of a contact lens is altering the immune system in the eye.
To have a clear insight on this particular aspect, all wearers must thoroughly wash their hands before touching the eyes and change lens liquid on a daily basis. Moreover, the contact lens hygiene must be flawless, with contacts changed and replaced as instructed by ophthalmologists.
With the help of a rigid hygiene the bacterial diversity on the surface of the eye remains less damaged. Contact lenses offer a high risk of inappropriate bacterial diversity, translated in higher amounts of microbes on the eye surface or conjunctiva than in the skin beneath the eye. Also, damaging microbes as Methylobacterium, Lactobacillius, Acineobacter and Pseudomonas are found in people who wear lenses.
If you thought about changing your glasses and replacing them with contact lenses, think twice. You may feel a lot more comfortable but you’re your eyes may suffer more and be far more exposed to health problems. Glasses can be a delicate accessory, hard to bear for large amounts of time, but for the time being this is the safest alternative when it comes to eyesight dysfunctionalities.
