The Harvey phenomenon started off as a level 4 hurricane only to continue for days with heavy rains. The event was so powerful that it caused the first landfall in Texas in the last decade. Numerous homes were destroyed beyond repair and death toll continues to increase. Nonetheless, the civic duty wasn’t late to appear. Besides private persons and charitable organizations, there were also many Hollywood stars who contributed financially to Harvey relief efforts.
DiCaprio’s Support to Harvey Relief Efforts Was the First Donation among Celebrities
On Wednesday, Leonardo DiCaprio announced that his charitable foundation had joined the efforts to solve the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey with a donation of $1 million. The funds will reach the United Way Harvey Recovery Fund. This organization was just created as a way to centralize all short and long term recovery resources. President and CEO of the United Way Worldwide, Brian Gallagher, responded with gratitude to DiCaprio’s involvement.
“Responding to Hurricane Harvey requires the best of all of us – and that’s what this gift represents.”
The non-profit foundation United Way reassured the public that all donations to its newly created fund are going to reach the points that Hurricane Harvey impacted. DiCaprio’s charity is no stranger from natural disaster relief programs. They helped the community recovery after the 2004 tsunami, Hurricane Sandy, and the Haiti earthquake.
While the Oscar winner was the first celebrity to help Harvey relief efforts, he is not the last notorious character to do so. On Tuesday, Sandra Bullock redirected $1 million to the American Red Cross. Her statement for this solidarity gesture claimed that it was her civic duty to do something about this natural disaster.
Ellen DeGeneres Dedicated a Segment of Her Talk Show to J. J. Watt and His Fundraising Campaign
Famous reality show hostess Ellen DeGeneres got involved in this humanitarian mission at a deeper level. She joined J. J. Watt in creating a fundraising campaign to support the recovery of the Harvey victims.
DeGeneres invited Watt to her talk show to inform her audience of his relief plan. He talked how any donation is going to help them supply victims with clothing, water, cleaning supplies, and generators. This segment of the show convinced Walmart to donate $1 million to Watt’s fundraising.
