It was just announced by Disney that it plans to make a sequel to its massive blockbuster Frozen, dubbed for now Frozen 2.
Disney revealed its plans for a sequel to Frozen on Thursday, during the Walt Disney Co.’s annual meeting of the shareholders in San Francisco.
Frozen won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2013. Producer Peter Del Vecho, from Walt Disney Animation Studios, along with Frozen’s film directors, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are working together to develop the project that will become Frozen 2.
The plans to produce Frozen 2 have just been made public and unfortunately, a release date and more production details are yet to be announced.
Chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, John Lassete was the one who made the announcement for Frozen 2 along with Bob Iger, Disney chief and Josh Gad the actor who voiced the character or charismatic Olaf in the first installment of Frozen.
Frozen was released on November 22, 2013 and it helped refresh Walt Disney Animation Studios. The movie was a massive blockbuster and the sequel doesn’t really come as much of a surprise. Even though the movie was launched one and a half years ago, it continues to be a major moneymaking force for Disney and its various divisions. There are Frozen-inspired clothes, school supplies, jewelry, perfume, makeup and much, much more. There is even a Frozen Broadway show!
At the box office, Frozen generated around $1.3 billion and broke numerous sales records at Disney’s stores and on home video.
While it has been predicted that Disney would launch a sequel, there was no official confirmation until now.
Frozen Fever is an animated short that reunited the song writers and characters and will come out in theaters this weekend, ahead of Disney’s live-action Cinderella.
Lesseter revealed:
We enjoyed making ‘Frozen Fever’ so much and being back in that world with those characters. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.
Aside from the new sequel to Frozen being announced during the shareholder meeting, Disney also revealed details of the next Star Wars films. The new Star Wars: Episode VIII directed by Rian Johnson will hit cinemas on May 26, 2017 and another standalone movie, Star Wars: Rogue One film by Gareth Edwards will be released on December 16, 2016.
