Some scientists from Netherlands have developed a simple way to of doing this by applying a revolutionary idea. They have created a method which is similar to the way in which plants produce their own resources. The development of artificial leaves is pretty well-known. These small devices are meant to transform light into power which may be used for different purposes.
We all know that plants use photosynthesis to produce their own chemicals which maintain their lives. The difference is that they are much better at generating this process that specialists are when trying to imitate it. Timothy Noel together with his team of researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology has discovered a method which will help these artificial plants generate chemical reactions similar to the ones used to organize medical molecules.
The key to their plan is to create this new type of material known as a luminescent solar concentrator, bound to transform light which is at a particular wavelength, guiding it to the edges of the artificial leaf. The material is equipped with thin channels along which the chemical components of pills are pumped. The light which is redirected to the edge of the device fuels the reaction.
When scientists implement the use of LSCs, the efficiency of the process is visibly improved, creating high-energy complex processes which may be carried out even on a cloudy day. Noel argued that they have now a powerful device which will enable them to fuel the production of chemical products through the use of sunlight. They can generate crop protection agents, but also several types of drugs.
This kind of device helps researchers develop pills and medication anywhere because all one needs is a mini-factory and sunlight. Thus, it is even possible to produce drugs on Mars or in the jungle, if you’d like to. This may be a very useful technology, especially when it comes to long-term development in areas with inadequate resources.
