According to a group of experts, pizza is healthier to consume for breakfast than a bowl of cereal. Dietitian Chelsey Amer recommends replacing cereal with a slice of pizza every morning.
Amer explained that both foods contain the same number of calories especially when you add milk to the cereal. But pizza is better because it has a higher amount of proteins which keeps you feel full until lunch.
What’s more, pizza has less sugar than most breakfast staples. Sugar influences hunger and mood levels negatively since it is behind the so-called sugar crashes. The major drawback of pizza is the grease.
- Nevertheless, not all types of cereal or pizza are created equal.
- For example, sugary cereal like the Cinnamon Toast Crunch comes with 130 calorie and 9 gr of sugar per serving.
- The bad news is that some people eat more than one serving.
According to a Consumer Reports analysis, people in North America eat gigantic cereal servings. Of 124 respondents, 92% admitted that they consumed more than one serving for breakfast. People who used large bowls tended to eat up to 92% more cereal than recommended. Some consumed up to 132% more than the usual serving size.
Pizza for Breakfast Has More Protein, Less Calorie
So, if a person eats two servings of sugary cereals with nonfat milk they consume as many as 350 calories, 5.30 gr of proteins, and 23 gr of sugar in a single meal. If they picked just a slice of cheese pizza from Pizza Hut, they consume 290 calories, 14 gr of protein, and no sugar.
Experts believe that sugary cereals are more harmful than pizza for breakfast, but Amer warns that eating pizza has its risks too. For instance, people eat too much salt, fat, and bad carbohydrates for breakfast if they consume more slices.
Plus, some pizzas have added sugar like the Pizza Hut’s marinara pizza which contains 490 mg of salt and 8 gr. of sugar per serving.
