According to the executive’s official post, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg donates $5 million to support young immigrants’ education. The money was donated to the non-profit organization TheDream.US, which is responsible for programs that facilitate education for illegal immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have always evinced a strong empathic feeling towards people, who are less fortunate than them. The young couple first decided to give back to the community in 2013, when they first founded the advocacy group FWD.US to enable poor students’ access to education.
On Wednesday afternoon, Zuckerberg decided to make another noble gesture for the less fortunate and donated $5 million of his yearly income to the organization TheDream.US. The non-profit group was founded in 2013 by the former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. The main mission of the group is to provide safe working and studying conditions for talented immigrants who want to integrate in the American community.
Ever since he was first notified about the mission of the organization, Mark Zuckerberg showed himself interested in contributing to the objectives of the society. He wrote on his Facebook account that he has decided to make this donation because he believes the American Dream must continue to exist in the 21st century.
In his opinion, the best way to maintain the American Dream is to invest in the education of the younger immigrants. He reminded his followers that America was founded by immigrants who had higher goals and for that matter, the tradition should be preserved in the 21st century, as well.
The $5 million donation will be used to fund scholarships for talented undocumented immigrants who want to take up careers on the territory of the United States. The scholarships will, nevertheless, be granted to students living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Zuckerberg further stated that he understands the feeling of alienation that some young immigrants might experience as they do not have other country except America. They were brought to the United States at a very young age and cannot conceive another nationality. Ironically, it is this particular nationality that refuses to acknowledge them and offer them equal rights.
The decision of Facebook’s CEO is in keeping with Obama’s recent reform. The president of the United States adopted in 2012 a program for the deferred deportation of some undocumented immigrants. The endeavor was strongly contested by the Republican opponents.
