Dr. Diane Boivin, from the McGill Univeristy, Montreal, said that women go to bed at a later biological time because their clock is shifted earlier. This makes them more likely to suffer from insomnia. So there should be no surprise if you are not able to sleep enough or if there are nights where you will stay awake. Getting enough sleep is not possible for most people, especially if they are stressed or think about their problems.
Researchers controlled also the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use. They wanted to see if there is a difference between women who use those pills and those who don’t. It seems that women had a hard time getting sleep no matter what. The study was small, but it can be seen as an evidence that women’s internal body clock is different from men’s. The National Sleep Foundation said that women are also more likely to have daytime sleepiness because they are more tired.
Researchers used data from 15 men and 11 men, who were around 25 years old. For 36 hours they were kept in a room with no windows, where scientists controlled their exposure to light and temperature. They scheduled sleep opportunities at different times of day to see what people would do.
They discovered that the sleep signal during the night was stronger for the men than for women. Moreover, the end of the night is a vulnerable period for women, who also had lower score regarding nighttime activity. That is why it is said that men are better at working during night shifts than men.
If you have sleep problems, you should try to sleep in a room with no light and where the noise will not disturb you. Another advice would be not to work in the room where you sleep.
