The search giant has launched a service of data storage which enables analysis of big data as a cloud service. A new NoSQL database will be launched with the introduction of Cloud Bigtable.
As the name suggests the database is powered by Google’s Bigtable system of data storage. However it has the advantage of being compatible with the Apache HBase API. Bigtable is also the base of other services such as Google Serch, Gmail and Google Analytics.
Google Cloud Bigtable could be used to store sensor data from an IoT (Internet of Things) monitoring system. Google’s director of product management for the Google Cloud Platform, Tom Kershaw, said that Google Cloud Bigtable is not something new since it has a base technology which had been run by the company for a long time.
This service could enable finance companies to house petabytes of trading data in order to analyze emerging trends. This technology could as well be beneficial for digital advertising firms, telecommunications companies and data-invasive industries such as biomedical and energy industry.
Cloud Bigtable is said to enable single-digit millisecond latency and when compared to Cassandra and HBase it offers two times the performance per dollar. Moreover besides being compatible with HBase API which means that Cloud Bigtable can be integrated with all the existing apps in the Hadoop ecosystem, the service also supports Google Cloud Dataflow and Google BigQuery.
Google is the company that will fully manage the service. It deals with the data replication for backup and it also encrypts security data. It is very easy to set up a Cloud Bigtable cluster. It only takes a few seconds. The storage scales automatically in accordance with the needs of the user. If the data set increases an additional storage capacity is automatically provided.
Google Cloud Platform product manager Cory O’Conner explained that Cloud Bigtable is different than Cloud Datastore which is designed for read-heavy workload for mobile and web apps. According to O’Conner this service is destined for large enterprises and companies which require extensive data processing and where workloads are more substantial.
Several third-party vendors have already started using Cloud Bigtable in their sets of services. Sungard, a financial software and service company, has used Cloud Bigtable to build a financial audit-trail system which is able to process 2.5 million trade messages per second.
For now the service is available in beta. All developers can test it in a free trial. Its price will depend on multiple factors such as the amount of storage used, the network usage and the number of nodes deployed.
