In 2015, Google had a full year and now updates Drive to make it easier for you to find your files.
- Google self-driving car hit the road
- Google might be Apple dependent
- Google Drive has the best searching tools
This year the major tech company has been experiencing both ups and downs, keeping us alert about what’s new, what’s updated and what’s not so cool and here are some examples.
Their smartwatch, although functional and nicely designed is far from their Apple competitor. Apple sold about 7 million smartwatches this year, whereas Google barely hit 300,000 units. Another thing that made Google lose some money and maybe some popularity was the Map Maker issue, when a drawing of the Android mascot appeared urinating on the Apple logo in Google Maps. Although the image was user-created, Google had to shut down the Map Maker for a while until they solved the moderation issues. What is most concerning for Google is the Apple dependence. Basically, a very big part of the company’s mobile ad income is coming from iPhones and iPads. But now Apple has Safari ad-blockers which will make it more difficult for Google to keep their revenue at the same level.
On the other hand, probably the biggest launch for Google this year was the self-driving car. The car hit the road this summer and although it’s going to take a while to start being commercialized the beginning is indeed promising. Google Photos was also a hit this year as you have unlimited free storage and it also comes with automatic facial recognition. Plus, Chromecast, which was launched in 2013, has finally started to rise after a small upgrade done this year and is now increasing in popularity.
And, last but not least, although definitely the most recent, Google Drive gets an upgrade. It seems that many people were looking forward to it as it makes it easier for you to find your files. Because, let’s face it, who could be better than Google at searching and finding things. Google drive comes with new features that allow you to search for a file that is shared using the file owner’s name or email address. Plus, it also comes with advanced search options that allow you to find your file using the date it was modified or the words it contains or who you’re sharing it with.
All in all, despite some negative outcomes, this seems to have been a good year for Google and we are looking forward to see what they come up with next year.
