Ah, summer! That wonderful time of the year when we can leave our jackets and scarves at home and go spend an entire afternoon relaxing at the pool. And on top of being a fun and sociable experience, doctors also tell us it’s a much needed daily dose of exercise.
There’s just one thing we don’t like. Often when we go to the pool, we end up with blood red eyes. But everyone knows that’s just from the chlorine, right? RIGHT? Wrong.
In the most disgusting news you’ll read today, experts from three (3) different institutions say that blood red eyes at the pool are caused by the chemical reaction that chlorine has when interacting with human urine…other people’s urine to make things worse…and lots of it.
The finding was made by the Healthy Swimming Program, a project that had the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Water Quality and Health Council, and the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) working alongside each other.
Michele Hlavsa, chief of the Healthy Swimming Program over at the Centers for Disease Control, gave a statement informing that “Chlorine and different disinfectants are added to a swimming pool to destroy germs. Peeing in a pool depletes chlorine and truly produces an irritant that makes individual’s eyes flip red”.
And that chlorine smell, at least that’s from the actual product, eight? Nope. The smell is also the result of chlorine having a chemical reaction with human urine, as well as sweat and dirt.
What’s possibly even more amazing is that you can’t blame chlorine for the stinging sensation in your eyes either. Yup, you guessed it, it’s because of the pee again.
Dr Michael Beach, associate director of the Healthy Water Program over at the Centers for Disease Control, gave a statement explaining that the chemical irritants that sting your eyes are formed when chlorine binds with all the different things that it’s trying to kill when a human body releases them.
Beyond the esthetic downside of the blood red eyes, there’s also a very real health issues that’s hidden underneath the surface. Recent studies have revealed that when chlorine reacts with urea and uric acid, two (2) chemicals found in urine, it creates two (2) different poisonous gases which can end up hurting people’s central nervous systems, lungs and hearts.
The news is bound to shock many of your friends and acquaintances as a new survey conducted by the Water Quality and Health Council has found that 71 percent (71%) of participants wrongfully blamed chlorine for the blood red eyes one gets after swimming in a pool.
The a spokesperson for the institution gave a statement informing people that this is an inconvenience that’s easy to prevent. All one has to do is use the toiled and take a shower before getting in the pool, which is meant for swimming, not peeing or bathing.
On top of everything, chlorine isn’t even efficient enough in killing certain types of bacteria. Or the very least, it takes too long to kill them and infections settle in anyway. The Centers for Disease Control shared that previous studies and surveys have shown that outbreaks of recreational water illnesses (RWIs) have been on the rise in recent years.
