After excessive eating on Christmas comes excessive drinking on New Year, so here’s how to prevent or treat hangovers.
- Don’t mix your drinks
- Drink plenty of water
- Don’t forget to eat
Most of us have at least a glass of champagne on New Year’s night and few of us end up being sober on our way home. This is the sleepless night of every year in which most people get extremely drunk.
The reasons are various. Besides the obvious joy and excitement that makes everyone believe another glass would be great, there are three main reasons why people get drunk. Some simply drink too much. Others are not used to drinking and two glasses of whatever booze will get them dizzy, and others tend to mix up the drinks and the results are usually less fun than expected.
So, in case you do want to drink but you’re not very keen on experiencing the effects of alcohol, here are some things you could do to avoid getting drunk. The first obvious solution is not to drink, but being at a party where there’s booze and lots of people drinking and having fun might make you get a drink anyway.
Another thing you should be careful about is what you drink. It is recommended that you choose one type of beverage and stick to it. Also, you should avoid dark liquors as they are more likely to cause hangovers; carbonated drinks such as champagne or beer, because the bubbles make your body absorb the alcohol a lot quicker. Moreover, you should also try to avoid drinking sugary drinks as they usually make you dizzier.
Don’t forget to eat something before drinking. It is recommended to have a full meal with lots of proteins or even fat. This will slow the process of getting drunk. Also, you should keep yourself hydrated. Alcohol leads to dehydration so you should try and have a glass of water for every glass of alcohol you consume.
In case you still get drunk and wake up with a terrible hangover the first thing you should do is keep hydrating with water. You can also take something for your headache such as aspirin or ibuprofen. It is also recommended to eat eggs, bananas and drink smoothies which could give you a sugar and vitamin boost without making you feel worse. Pickle juice is also a traditional and good way of getting over hangovers.
After trying these things out all there’s left to do is wait, and maybe make a resolution of drinking less next year. You probably won’t keep your promise, but it’s worth the shot.
