Former president of the United States, Jimmy Carter revealed he has cancer. According to a recent report, the 90 year old former president found out he has cancer that has spread to other regions of his body during a liver surgery.
The 39th president said that he will adjust his schedule in order to accommodate his treatment at the Emory Healthcare.
Wednesday, Carter said that he will release more info soon, when all the facts are known. Jimmy Carter underwent surgery on the 3rd of August at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta in order to remove a small mass from his liver. The liver is normally a place where the cancer spreads quite quickly.
Jimmy Carter served as governor of Georgia before his presidency and he was also a peanut farmer. In 1981, after leaving the White House, Carter remained active in carrying out humanitarian efforts within his Carter Center.
Carter, who is an activist on a variety of issues from children’s and women rights to global democracy and a Nobel Peace Prize victor, published his new book earlier last month, called “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety”.
Given how old the president is, any possible treatments, their probability and impacts, will most likely be discussed very carefully with Jimmy Carter and his entire family. If chemotherapy is to be considered, it would need to be taken into account carefully because of his age.
Spokeswoman for Jimmy Carter, Deanna Congileo called the surgery optional and said that the prognosis of the 90 year old president is excellent for full recovery. She added that cancer inside a person who is 90 years old is definitely a serious problem, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that he can’t benefit from the treatment.
President Barack Obama said that his and the first lady’s prayers and thoughts are with the entire family of Jimmy Carter.
Obama released a statement in which he wished the 39th president a full and very fast recovery.
“Jimmy, you’re as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you.”
President Barack Obama said.
Jimmy Carter established the Carter Center in 1982 in order to promote several issues, such as democracy and health care. He also aided in defusing nuclear tensions between South and North Korea and supervised the first Palestinian elections. Carter also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
