Sen John McCain to Miss Tax Plan Vote Because of Cancer Therapy

December 18, 2017 by Jakob Nielsen Leave a Comment

GOP Senator John McCain and George W. Bush

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) had to leave Washington, D.C., after being hospitalized because of the multiple side-effects of the cancer therapy he is on in hopes to treat his brain cancer.

According to CBS News, the Arizona Republican will spend the holidays in his home state with his family. This means that he won’t be able to vote on the Republican Party’s tax overhaul bill. The vote is expected to happen this week.

McCain promised to get back to work in January.

  • The senator’s doctor Dr. Mark Gilbert said Sunday that the lawmaker had “responded well to treatment” at the Maryland hospital he was taken to last week.
  • The doctor added that his patient seems to respond “positively” to his cancer treatment as well.

Reportedly, McCain will get therapy at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. His office said he is grateful for the attention he receives and ongoing efforts to keep him afloat. McCain also thanked all the people that outpoured support across the country.

John McCain’s Tax Vote Not Critical

Experts, on the other hand, don’t think the Arizona Senator’s vote is critical for the bill’s passage as two more key votes – those of Bob Corker and Marco Rubio – have just been announced. Rubio and Corker originally said they would oppose the proposed tax plan. The tax bill will go for a vote in the U.S. House on Tuesday.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump told the White House press corps that McCain was going “through a very rough time.” According to Trump, the Senator promised to return to work if the GOP needed his vote.

McCain was reportedly treated for a viral infection at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He was hospitalized Wednesday, and on Sunday, his son-in-law told reporters the congressman was “in good spirits.”
