Kathy Griffin has left E’s most popular program, Fashion Police. Less than a week ago, another presenter of Fashion Police, Kelly Osbourne, left.
Griffin announced yesterday on Twitter that she wasn’t planning to remain in her seat, as presenter for Fashion Police. Many thought her account got hacked, but her publicist verified her tweet and it appears that after just seven episodes of Fashion Police, the comedian is leaving the show.
The official reason given by Kathy Griffin is that her style just doesn’t go well with the show’s creative direction. Her tweet also revealed that she was somewhat unhappy with the show’s critiques of celebrity looks.
Her tweet said:
There is plenty to make fun of in pop culture without bringing people’s bodies into it. … I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference.
Griffin added that her professional and personal goal was to help women, gay kids and people of color and anyone who feels that they are underrepresented to have a laugh and a voice.
Many wonder if Griffin’s departure isn’t linked to the reason why Osbourne left Fashion Police. Ozzy Osborne’s daughter left following a dreadlock scandal. It all began when co-host, Giuliana Rancic, made an ill-advised comment about the dreadlocks of young African-American Disney singer/actress Zendaya. Rancic said that she felt the young woman’s dreadlocks must smell like marijuana.
Zendaya posted on Twitter a lengthy response to Rancic’s comment and called them outrageously offensive. Rancic apologized both on Twitter and on camera, saying that her experience taught her not to perpetuate stereotypes and clichés. Zendaya accepted Giuliana Rancic’s apologies.
While Osbourne didn’t cite Rancic’s comments as the reason for her departure, she did express that she does not condone racism and that Zendaya is a close friend of hers.
Fashion Police has been going through a rough patch since the show’s creator and pillar, Joan Rivers passed away last year.
It is rumored, but not confirmed, that Khloe Kardashian is going to replace Kelly Osbourne, but not word just yet on who is going to be Kathy Griffin’s replacement.
E! Channel released a statement in which they said the next episode of Fashion Police is going to air on March 30.
