Machines Inching Closer to Learning from Experience, Just Like Us

March 6, 2018 by Jakob Nielsen Leave a Comment

Humanoid Robot Playing Ping PingResearchers are inching closer to creating an AI-based platform that can enable machines learn from experience just like people do.

Paul Rad who leads the team of engineers developing the system is confident the platform will remove the need of programming computers as they will be able to learn on their own.

In this study, we are presenting an entirely new platform for machine learning to teach computers to learn the way we do,

said the researcher.

The platform for cognitive learning, which is cloud-based, was built on scientists’ understanding on how education has shaped humanity over the last 500 years. Study authors are confident that, with proper training, machines can develop deductive reasoning as well.

Raid underlined that smarter machines will be able to better help us. So, since humans tend to get better by learning from experience, so should machines. The research team has also conducted a separate study on how humans learn throughout their entire lives.

Machines Could Learn from Experience

Children, for example, first identify surrounding objects and then develop communication skills. The process takes time and their understanding becomes sharper in time.

  • The team wants computers to detect threats automatically.
  • In other words, AI-powered computers will learn how normal network traffic looks like and get better at detecting and preventing intruders from breaking into the system.

Reid’s team also dreams of a future when a computer assistant can analyze and synthetize a pile of documents and memos for a human operator for him to take a decision instantly based on those documents without actually reading the material.

What’s more, AI could be used in medicine for diagnoses, which could result in cheaper health care services. Other fields that rely on deductive reasoning could also benefit from the technology.
