NASA has created a computer chip bound to resist on Venus despite the harsh conditions. Even if Mars gets all astronomers attention, scientists should also take a look at Venus which is actually closer to our planet than Mars. Venus is known to have the hottest surface compared to all the other planets existing in our solar system.
- Scientists at NASA developed a computer chip bound to last more on the surface of Venus.
- While Mars gets all the attention, we forget that we can analyze Venus which is closer to Earth.
- Even if Venus has harsh conditions, we should struggle to find out more about it.
The surface of Venus is even hotter than the one of Mercury. The caustic and dense atmosphere of the planet does not allow any of our computers and gadgets to resist under such harsh circumstances for more than a few hours. Nevertheless, after so many efforts, scientists may think that they had finally revealed a solution.
Researchers from NASA built a computer chip and decided to test the device without protective packaging or cooling mechanisms in a high-temperature, high-pressure environment like the one on Venus. The project had favorable results. The last time NASA sent a rover to Venus was in 1982. Based on the records, the Russian lander lasted for about two hours on the hot surface of Venus.
However, the space agency is bound to launch a new craft in 2023 meant to reach Venus. But first, NASA needs to make sure that the computer chip developed can withstand the eight hundred degrees Fahrenheit environment of Venus. Philip Neudeck, an electronics engineer from the NASA Glenn Research Center in Ohio, noted that if you were to look at Mars missions, there were many rovers which collected data from the surface of the Red Planet.
Despite all the efforts, the dataset is absent when we think of Venus. The primary cause is that electronics and advanced equipment do not work on this planet. Venus has a lot of characteristics which are of great interest to us, being worth examining it. Based on the reports filed by the authors of the study, the greenhouse gas-charged atmosphere and the geological process could help astronomers understand processes taking place on our planet.
To be able to figure out how to develop a computer chip durable to Venus’ environment, scientists need to study more details about transistors and semiconductors. Semiconductors are metals through which current passes less efficiently than it travels through regular conductors.
