Parents Brought to Trial for Naming Baby Inappropriate Name

Beautiful baby girl among stuffed toysA French couple landed in court for giving their baby girl an unusual name. The judge ruled that the name could harm the girl as she grows up and should be changed.

France has very strict rules when it comes to baby names and parents have been often banned from giving their kids unusual names. So, the parents should have though twice before reaching the conclusion that ‘Liam’ would be a nice name for their baby daughter.

The name per se is not unusual… for a boy that is. The government sent the couple to trial for giving their daughter a name that is traditionally used for boys. Authorities argued that the name boosts the risk of creating ‘gender confusion’ as the baby grows up.

The prosecutor argued that naming the girl Liam would be contrary to her interests and “could harm her in her social relations.” Prosecution asked the judge to prevent the couple from naming their kid that way.

Parents Fighting the Decision

Parents were also asked to come up with a new name for their child or else the judge will do it. The couple appealed the ruling and are now seeking legal counsel. Until the issue is settled, the baptism was postponed.

  • Baby names are a serious issue in France, and such court hearings are not a first.
  • In the past, French courts banned parents from naming their babies ‘Strawberry,’ ‘Nutella,’ or ‘Manhattan’.

In the U.S., a man named his two boys ‘Adolf Hitler’ and ‘Heinrich Himmler’ after the names of the famous Nazi dictator and one of his most trusted SS commanders. Authorities learned about the incident after the man ordered a cake for Adolf’s birthday and asked it to be decorated with the name.

The two boys and the man’s baby daughter, who was named ‘Eva Brown’ after Hitler’s mistress, landed in state care.
