It’s not exactly what it may sound like, but if you’re a struggling student, PornHub offers a scholarship by how you make others happy, and trying to give back to the world after their monumental success.
The adult entertainment website is one of the most popular in its branch, with 78.9 billion views each year. The new PornHub Cares Scholarship is just one more on their surprisingly decent list of generous donations and attention to philanthropic goals. Since 2012, they have held several charities and hosted many events that aimed to help others, as well as promoting their website.
Now, it’s making way into the issue of high taxes of college tuitions, and struggling students who often experience the problem on their own skin. One lucky applicant will get the $25,000 scholarship to study whatever subject he or she may choose, ranging from “medicine, botany, paranormal psychology” or anything else under the sun.
There are no definite terms to what the student has to do with the money, but there are criteria. First of all, applicants must be at least 18 years old with a GPA of 3.2 or higher in order to qualify. Those are the main requirements, but then they will have to go through a relatively loose application process.
Participants must submit their official transcripts, along with two other submissions that will set them apart from the rest. The first will be a 1000 to 1500 word essay, answering the question “How do you strive to make others happy?”, along with a 2 to 5 minute long video that elaborates on “the good work that you do”.
It should be noted that the quotation marks imply statements, not sarcasm or sexual innuendos, just to clarify.
According to PornHub’s vice president, Corey Price, the company is striving to give back and helping a student receive higher education could be an excellent way to achieve it. However, the charitable offer has already seen expected criticism.
It could be a great opportunity and a decent way for the website to give back. Or, according to Dawn Hawkins of the National Center of Sexual Exploitation, it could be a cunning and “deceptive marketing scheme”. It came as no surprise to Price that their scholarship is viewed as controversial, and has noted that if you disapprove against pornography, it may certainly not be your first choice.
Of course, the criteria does civilly add that porn videos of applicants performing any sort of sexual activity will not be taken seriously. So, there is that. But nudity will not be a reason for disqualification, which has likely prompted a few to shake their fingers and remind us of the dangers of pornography.
However, PornHub does not seem affected or slowed down by criticism, and it’s taking quite an accepting stance. If it’s a genuine offer and truly does put someone through college, then why not? It’s all in the purpose of spreading the joy.
