A woman from Ohio has recently posted a photo of her baby daughter with what appears to be a piercing in her left dimple. Fortunately, the photo was a fake, which the woman created to make a point about circumcision. However, the photo had an unsuspected impact, and many people who didn’t understand it was a fake sent thousands of threats to the woman.
- The woman wanted to protest against circumcision and other body modifications in children.
- She edited a photo of her daughter and added her a fake dimple piercing.
- People misinterpreted her act, and sent her threats.
Enedina Vance from Fostoria, Ohio calls herself an intactivist, and is against all kinds of body modifications people do to their children against their will. Therefore, she decided to use a special photo filter on her daughter’s picture and make it look like she had a dimple piercing. Through this attempt, she was hoping she could raise awareness about circumcision, and how damaging it might be for little boys.
However, this photo reached way beyond her intended audience, and scored 14,000 shares on Facebook. It didn’t have the effect she expected, as many people failed to see Vance’s true motivation, and she didn’t actually pierce her daughter’s dimple.
She made quite a straightforward post, in which she claimed that she owned her daughter, and could take all decisions for her until she turned 18. Then, she added a #sarcasm hashtag at the end, to make sure people won’t take her seriously. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen.
She received many threats from outraged people, who claimed would call the police and the child protective services. They said she was abusive, and unfit to be a mother. Others used extremely violent language, and said she should be beaten to death.
Vance understands this anger, but they didn’t take her point and got angry at the wrong thing. Now, she hopes more people would understand that it is wrong to perform such body alterations on your children.

She’s got a point. People are freaking out about an imaginary piercing, but think it’s normal to have parts cut off a baby boy’s genitals.
