Officials said that starting 2017, they are planning to reduce the red wolves’ territory. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service wants to make a federal wildlife refuge as the new home for those animals. For the moment, red wolves have a five-county area where they can live.
- The authorities want to reduce red wolves’ territory, starting from 2017.
- The animals that will leave the wildlife refuge will be captured and send to a zoo.
This decision came after more people complained that wolves are causing problems in their lands. It seems that those wolves which will walk beyond the boundaries would be captured and placed in a captive program. The authorities thought a lot before making this decision, but they think it is the best thing they can do for the animals and also for humans.
There are 45 red wolves that live there, at the moment. The biggest problem is that the wildlife refuge could hold only 15 of them. There are many people against this decision. An animal is not able to know that some areas are restricted to it. According to the officials, every red wolf that will leave the area, by mistake, will go to the zoo, which is not right.
However, the officials have another opinion. They think that their plan will double the current captive population and protect the red wolves. It seems that not even the captive population is safe and if people will not help them, they could be also in danger. The wildlife service promised to look for more areas where red wolves could be introduced.
Conservationists think this was said just to make them agree with the idea. It would be too difficult to negotiate with a state for a new territory, so it is possible that nothing will change in the future. The government said that they provide more than 1 million dollars budget for veterinary care for these animals. Conservationists still think that the authorities do not pay attention to the wildlife and this will make the red wolves endangered. There should be more rules that do not allow humans to kill wolves and to protect animals which are already vulnerable. What do you think about the decision to reduce red wolves’ territory?
