Global warming has been a major issue in the past few years and will become more dangerous with the time. According to a new study published on Thursday in the journal of the American Geophysical Union, a military base could be revealed by global warming. At the end of the century. A U.S. nuclear base in northern Greenland can expose the environment to the radioactive coolant.
- An U.S. military base could be exposed by the global warming, as the ice sheet will melt by the end of the century.
- Global warming is a major threat for all of us.
The American base, named Camp Century, was built on the ice sheet in 1959. It had two missions: the public one was scientific tasks, while the top-secret mission was testing nuclear missiles during the Cold War. The goal was to build missiles which were able to reach the Soviet Union. The military base was abandoned, alongside with its radioactive coolant and gallons of diesel fuel, in 1967. At least 100 feats of snow have fallen on top of it since being abandoned.
Global warming and climate change warmed the Arctic more than any other place on Earth. That is the reason why the portion of the ice sheet that covers the military base is expecting to melt by the end of the century and all that waste could end up into the ocean. This thing would be a threat to the ecosystems of the fish and animals and for the people who depend on them. The authorities must find a solution as the ice is melting with 8000 tons per second.
Moreover, this discovery could lead to political disputes. Who will clean up the mess? Even though the Americans built the base, Greenland is now a self-governing territory. Once this issue will be resolved, it may come as an example of other climate-change problems around the world.
Global warming is the result of an increase in the earth’s average surface temperature. This phenomenon happens due to the greenhouse gases, that are required for the presence of the human life. Its effects are really dangerous for our planet.
Global warming is causing extreme weather changes that are affecting our lives. The military base that could be revealed is just another example of what could happen. By 2040, the Artic region is expected to be an ice-free place. Humans are the ones who should take the blame for this and we should also try to make some changes for our own good.
