Snow leopards are decreasing their number because annual reports show that 450 of them are being killed. Experts claim that there are only four thousand snow leopards left. These felines are on the verge of becoming extinct because of people. This amazing creature is to be found in the mountains of Central Asia.
- Snow leopards are endangered because of hunting.
- This species needs to be protected because the number of snow leopards decreased.
Their number has consistently been dropping because of revengeful farmers who kill them because valuable animals from their yard were eaten by these felines. Others have killed snow leopards through illegal hunting for their skin. It is a pity that we, people, do not value the creatures that have been created with a purpose and we kill them for a new fur coat. We are so irresponsible that we aren’t aware that we destroy an ecosystem.
According to Traffic and World Wildlife Fund, since 2008 until the present day, there have been exterminated approximately 450 individuals of this species. Experts have estimated that about four thousand snow leopards live in the mountains of Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, Mongolia and China.
The number of killings per year may be higher than four hundred because there are a lot of illegal hunting activities which are impossible to be monitored by authorities. People hunt these creatures for their fur, teeth, and bones which can be sold at a very high price.
James Compton, a representative from the Traffic and World Wildlife Fund, has claimed that the majority of these disasters are more likely to happen because of retaliatory killing. Such valuable things like teeth and fur can value a lot of money in the retail industry.
The Kyrgyzstan officials have thought of developing a sanctuary for conservation purposes. This shelter is meant to protect the lives of the snow leopards from the favorite hunting territory called Shamshy, located nearby Bishkek.
This project is sponsored by the Snow Leopard Foundation and the Snow Leopard Trust which are bound to build a proper habitat for those almost endangered creatures. People are threatening these felines habitat to help themselves develop a better way to make retail industry boost.
The reports made by Traffic and World Wildlife Fund requested the help of the locals. They were advised to work together and prevent the hunting of snow leopards, finding new ways of protecting their farm animals, without hurting the felines anymore.
