- Specialists indicate that synthetic pot has terrible effects on adolescents.
- This fake marijuana is bound to trigger violent behavior or an abuse for other drugs.
- Some teenagers who smoke fake pot reported to have been physically or sexually abused.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled that synthetic marijuana, which is also known as fake weed, is an umbrella term for a wide variety of drugs which are sold under several brand names. In the past, K2 and Spice used to be familiar brands. Some of the chemical compositions of fake marijuana are also present in the real pot.
Based on the data provided by the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), these drugs are sold as being safe and natural, but they have life-threatening effects on people’s health. NIDA warns teenagers to pay attention to these drugs which started becoming popular because they are available and very cheap.
Heather Clayton, a health scientist at the CDC, argued that the new research indicates that teenagers who reported using this type of fake drug have probably reached a worrying health trajectory. The effects could be severe given the fact that the use of synthetic pot is common among students. Clayton noted that almost one out of ten high school students had declared smoking fake pot.
To develop the study, Clayton together with her colleagues have gathered information on nearly 16,000 high school students. The data was collected back in 2015. In the survey, the participants were interviewed and asked about the use of marijuana and synthetic marijuana. Moreover, they were also asked if they have ever used other drugs, or if they experienced unusual sexual behavior, mental health issues or violent behavior.
Those who used fake pot reported to have been injured or to engage in violent activities compared to those who smoked only marijuana. For instance, teenagers who used fake marijuana were more likely to fight with someone or to carry a gun all the time. Nevertheless, these adolescents were also more likely to have been the victims of physical or sexual violence.
