- She was first diagnosed with urinary tract infection before hepatitis
- Green tea has also been linked to liver damage when used in supplements
The first visit had doctors diagnosing her with an urinary tract infection after going on limited information, including the fact that she didn’t essentially abuse green tea. She complained of dizziness, nausea, and joint pains, so the doctors prescribed her antibiotics and send her home.
Barely two days later, the symptoms became worse, so she went to an A&E unit where she was told that she was suffering from jaundice, a condition that causes the liver to swell and the skin to turn yellow. According to the reports, she told the doctors that she had not consumed alcohol, drugs, or other types of medication that might’ve caused her condition.
However, she did reveal her binge drinking on green tea, which she has been indulging in daily in massive amounts for the purpose of dieting. This had caused an acute form of hepatitis, which launched her symptoms.
After shedding just a few pounds though, the symptoms started, and when she was told to lay off the commonly healthy beverage, she saw to a quick and “sustained recovery”.
According to the British Medical Journal, it’s a “rare but occurring theme” when a patient develops the infection from excessive tea drinking, which is commonly seen as an incredibly healthy habit. In fact, green tea is associated cardiovascular health, reducing risk of cancer, along with aiding weight loss.
The boxes the teenage girl ordered had instructions written in Chinese, which made identifying the additional ingredients impossible for her. It put it up to question what other compounds were found in the mix that she drank regularly and in high amounts for three months.
Green tea has also been attributed to issues such as liver damage after customers either ingested tea leaf powder or used diet pills with tea extracts.
It was concluded that she developed hepatitis due to the extended exposure to the substances within the green tea, which led to hydroxycut hepatotoxicity, a liver problem caused by herbal diet supplements. It has been noted that some patients had develop such grave conditions from certain brews that they require a liver transplant.
The doctors acknowledge that green tea is certainly healthy, with beneficial anti-oxidant qualities, and there is a possibility that added ingredients to the tea might’ve caused the illness as well, or the pesticides used on tea tress.
