Although this used to be a condition that affected middle-aged and old people it looks like nowadays teenagers are more prone to kidney stones.
- Kidney stones are now more common among teenagers
- Teenagers don’t hydrate or drink too many sodium beverages
- A bigger kidney stone can only be eliminated through surgery
Overall, according to statistics the number of people with kidney stones has increased by 16% from 1997 to 2012. However, the biggest increase was registered among teenagers with 4.3% every year.
What’s behind this condition? The most common reason is not drinking enough water. Another reason is a higher sodium intake, which basically means we eat too much salt. And last but not least, our organism may need more calcium. A combination of the three naturally leads to bigger problems. And when I say ‘bigger’, I mean it literally. The stones can grow bigger if you don’t do something about it.
Depending on the size of the stone or stones, you can experience abdominal and lower back pains as well as nausea or urinating blood. If the stone is small you can eliminate it by drinking larger amounts of water, in some cases accompanied by medical treatment.
However, if the stone is larger, which makes it impossible to get rid of it through the urinary tract, than you will have to rely on surgery. There are now available more types of surgical procedures, some less invasive than others. Doctors can remove the stones by breaking them into smaller pieces using sound waves. After that, being in smaller pieces they can be eliminated naturally.
But much of this information is not new for middle aged persons or for seniors. However, it should concern teenagers or their parents. Having a balanced diet and keeping yourself hydrated is very important.
You should stay away from beverages with high amount of sodium and drink instead as much water as possible. Also, staying away from alcohol will help. Although it is liquid, alcohol will actually dehydrate you, so it won’t help with your kidneys. You should have a total of 15 cups of water a day.
You can also get hydrated by eating fruits such as apples or watermelons. Besides, lemonade could also work great. Besides getting hydrated, don’t forget to go to the toilet from once in a while. Keeping toxins inside of your body also leads to the occurrence or kidney stones as well as certain infections, so make sure you get rid of these toxins.
