Even if you’re not a fan of rock climbing, ‘The Climb’ on Oculus Rift will dazzle and awe all prospective players with spectacular sights and thrilling gameplay.
- ‘The Climb’ is developed by Crytek for virtual reality
- It will be playable on the Oculus Rift headset once it releases in 2016
- Players will be placed in the shoes of a rock climber, heading up mountains and cliffs
- The game will run on CryEngine
This is where adrenaline junkies could thrive, and where those who always wanted to do it but never had the courage could experience it.
‘The Climb’ is being developed by Crytek, and it’s the company’s first title for virtual reality. It will be played on Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, and will take players up the mountains, cliffs, and the precipice of fragile ladders. It’s set to thrill, frighten, excite, and overall make players break out in sweat. And, most importantly, to entertain and offer an experience like never before.
According to director of production at Crytek, Jason Rubin, “fun comes first”. It’s heart of any game and where virtual reality can excel even through small titles. Until major games will appear in the next year or two, with complicated storylines, small games with elegance and simplicity will thrive. ‘The Climb’ could potentially be one of them.
However, there are numerous challenges facing the use of VR headsets. One of them is the issue of finding just the right spot between simulator and watching a movie, according to Rubin. Their team was aiming toward that happy middle, by making a visually pleasant game that is both engaging and different than anything else.
All of this while avoiding the “simulation sickness”.
It places the player into another world entirely, in exotic locations and dangerous situations, all from the comfort of their own home. Through their game, Rubin hopes to offer the public a way to experience something they’ve likely always wanted to try, but never did. Many testers of the game have claimed that they could never do it in real life.
One of the many aspects of ‘The Climb’ that has been highlighted by testers is height. It completely immerses the player into the shoes of the climber, holding on for dear life, making leaps across the rocks, sweating, grabbing, and probably cursing. They are given the precise feeling of clinging to the edge of a mountain, down the knot in their stomach.
Players will be able to use the buttons to climb, choose their directions by looking at it, and shifting their weight around in certain situations. When mixing that with the spectacular visuals thanks to the CryEngine, it could become an immeasurably thrilling game.
According to the developers, there will be three different mountain faces to climb in each location with three difficulties (easy, medium, and hard) for each in part. However, they will tackle numerous locations around the world, so the possibilities are endless.
‘The Climb’ is expected to release at the same time as Oculus Rift. That will be in early 2016, and the exciting experience will be ready for players by then.
