The Pennsylvania beauty queen cancer scam started right after Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates won the title for Miss Pennsylvania just this year. Profiting from the sudden boom in popularity that she had on her side, the now convicted felon has faked cancer to receive money from people.
This just goes to show that people will go to any lengths for money. It also is standing proof that those of us who society at one point deems role models can eventually turn out to be just as corruptible as any other human being. However, the details of the scam carried out by the now-former beauty queen add even more drama to the case.
Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates is just 23 years old. She will now be spending time in prison, convicted for theft via receiving stolen property and deception.
This all began when the woman posted a no-longer-available video on YouTube, in which she was saying that for two years straight, she had been battling a very aggressive form of cancer: chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This was in an effort to gather donation money from people in the community with a will to give a helping hand.
To this extent, she subsequently organized several fund raising events to allegedly pay for chemotherapy treatment bills that never existed. The most recent one, back in April, called “Bingo for Brandi” (it does seem ironic now, doesn’t it?), managed to raise the generous sum of $14,000 dollars.
Speaking to The Center County Gazette, Brandi said that her diagnosis came through back in 2013, in March, and that ever since, she had been struggling with the deadly disease, as well as with the painful radioactive treatment. She even spoke about one other fund raising event that managed to give her quite a large sum.
During the interview, she said that the event shows how much the community is willing to get together to help a single suffering individual through one of the most difficult times in her life. It sure was difficult, alright! She even spoke about how hard it was for her parents to go through this period, and that she felt bad about dragging them through it.
How right she was though! You actually can admire her scheming capabilities, as she even lied to her parents about having cancer. So much so, that they actually took her to the hospital for treatments that she never received, and waited in the hall for hours while she was sitting alone in another part of the building.
Inconsistencies in her appearance eventually led an anonymous donor to tip off the police. Her bail is set at $150,000.
