Right, now don’t be drawn back by the wagon part of the car. I know that here in America, these German aliens are misunderstood and underappreciated. But let me tell you a story about the VW Golf SportWagen and what you didn’t know about it.
If you’re looking for something sturdy and reliable; for some sort of serious car that, much like its owner, likes to skulk in the shadows, and doesn’t understand jokes… then, here you are! This is the perfect car for you!
All jokes aside, the Golf SportWagen TDL SEL DSG is a car for those who like wagons. That being said, I will now try to convince those of you who don’t.
The car is a spiritual successor to the Jetta SportWagen. Which is how it was called in the U.S. – because in the rest of the world, it was still the Golf. So, Volkswagen decided to stop with the confusion, and give it the same name everywhere.
Compared to its younger, more reckless version (which had something of a cult following over here), this new model is more civilized, less of a show-off. It is lighter, but a good deal stronger than the Jetta version. So if you’re not looking to get an SUV, but still want the benefits of one, this may be the way to go, since most other models that try to do both a sedan and a SUV at the same time, end up doing neither.
Its cargo space measures 66.5 cubic feet. The Trax mini-SUV by Chevy has less than that. The CR-V from Honda has only a little bit more room. What could you want more?
It has a turbodiesel, direct-injected engine with four cylinders. This gives an astonishing fuel mileage of just 31 per gallon in the city, and either 42, or 43 on the highway. The latter depends on which transmission you choose.
For the starting model, you will have to pay just $22,215. That’s in the bottom end of the SUV pricing list. But, if you want the full-option model, you’ll have to spend about 32 thousand. Yet, for all that money, you get things like keyless entry, a rear camera, and climate control with two zones, heated seats, panorama sunroof, and other features.
Still, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. There are minor problems with the way the touchscreen responds to commands. The rear suspension torsion beam is not as desired. And no leather seats.
