In a constant effort to give Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Deviantart and LinkedIn a run for their money, Twitter is always adding and updating its services. The most recent addition includes a product dubbed Project Lightning.
The service will bring everything from media reports, to personal posts (messages, photos and videos) on current events into the news feed of the micro blog’s users. Twitter’s Kevin Weil gave a statement referring to it as a brand new way to look at tweets.
Project Lightning si designed to make it easier for the social media platform’s community to follow current events as right now you have an advanced Twitter user with a certain level of dexterity in order to successfully stay tuned into major stories and events that interest you.
Twitter Inc’s new product is said to have an editorial approach as to news curation as it will involve a group of experts with newsroom backgrounds, whob will be responsible for identifying the best tweets that anyone interested in a subject can follow on the website.
A Twitter spokesperson gave a statement saying that “We’ve seen in the past that we have so much conversation around events. But the challenge we’ve had over the years is, although we have the world’s greatest content, it’s like having a television without a channel guide or even a remote control”.
Events that one can follow on Twitter are as diverse as a TV show premiere, the Super Bawl, the Oscars, election results, or even a prison escape.
The people working on Project Lightning hope the service will draw in even more people to the social media platforms, so that their core base of 302 million monthly active users can grow even further, and hopefully someday give Facebook a lot more serious competition.
Project Lightning could also prove to have value to TV networks. Twitter Inc has already expressed it would very much like to complement TV networks by helping them the Millennial generation (youngsters with the age between 18 and 25) to watch TV again. Members of this generation are notorious for spending a lot more time on their computers and mobile devices than in front of the TV.
They have not stopped watching TV shows. It’s quite the opposite. Many of them are actively involved in online communities than analyze episodes and create fanarts as a sign of their love for a certain TV show.
However, they tend to watch them on their computers, looking for them in various online sources, which a lot of the time ends up hurting ratings due to the TV networks’ outdated approach to measuring ratings.
Millennials are the primary demographic on Twitter, which means that TV networks can use the micro bloging platform to easily reach them.
