The West Nile Virus in one of the biggest threats of this century. Every year there were deaths reported due to this virus and it does seem that the situation has not changed. The first death linked to Wet Nile virus, in 2016, was reported by Dallas County Health and Human Services on Monday.
- West Nile Virus is one of the most dangerous threats for us.
- Every year there are people diagnosed with this virus, which has no treatment.
- Stay away from the mosquitoes because they are spreading this virus.
Unfortunately, the patient who died was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, which is the most dangerous form of te virus. The situation is getting worse as this major threat is continuing to spread across the country. The virus was detected also in areas like Carson, Lincon Height, Newhall and Willowbrook and we are sure these will not be the last areas where it will spread.
The authorities announced that 40 recent mosquito samples were tested as positive. The virus was also detected in birds or chickens that were found dead in the area.
What can we do in order to protect ourselves? Well, first of all, try to stay indoor as long as possible especially at dawn. Moreover, we should pay attention to the way we are dressing as we should have pants and long-sleeved shirts. Another measure would be using insect repellent or products that would keep the mosquitoes away. If you want to keep the “enemy” away, make sure your doors and windows are closed. If you did not by know, standing water can attract mosquitoes so get rid of it. We are not talking about pools as long as they are treated with chemicals.
Dallas County has reported 18 human cases of West Nile virus, but only one death. There were years when no death was reported, even though this virus remains a major threat. Mosquitoes do seem to be a huge problem these days. Besides West Nile virus, Zika is also a disease spread by them. So be aware of the danger a mosquito can be and take care of your health. What is important to know it that most of the people who are infected with the West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. About one in five people develop a fever and maybe other symptoms such as body aches or vomiting. There is no official treatment for the West Nile Virus. However, people can use pain relievers to reduce fever or even receive nursing care at the hospital. Keep in mind that the threat is still out there and stay away from mosquitoes.
