As per latest figures released by The National Center for Health Statistics, over two thirds of America are overweight and of this one third are obese. The costs of this condition, adds up to billions of dollars in annual medical costs. Overweight persons are also more likely to suffer from heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.
In a study, researchers compared branded and non branded diets to establish which one of these is better.
The study involves trials comparing the Atkins diet, Weight Watchers or South Beach Diet with traditional dieting methods. Dieters on Atkins, Zone and Weight Watchers lost similar amounts of weight over a one year period and when compared to non branded diets they also lost similar amount of weight. There was no difference in the levels of health indicators like cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels for the branded diets.
Most dieters post study gained some weight back as compared to weight watchers who did not gain weight.
Lindsay Malone, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic said, “Weight Watchers may have been associated with more lasting weight loss because it builds in allowances for going off-plan, around the holidays or for special occasions, said. Anyone trying to lose weight can try to allow for some flexibility like that, which may help achieve sustainable results.”
