Google is not only one of the top players in the technology industry which is the most prosper business field in the world, but also a top employer, constantly expanding its team of experts and creatives in the realm of technology.
In the segmented world we’re living in, striving with sustained efforts to promote gender and race equality, Google seems to be far away from reaching the top in openness and diversity. At Google, seven out of ten employees are still men. All the suffragettes out there still holding the first lines of feminism rebellion, brace yourselves and prepare to raise your voices in front of gender inequality promoted by Google. Moreover, most employees are white, with a total percentage of 60%, and Asian representatives, with a 31% percentage.
One of Google’s major aims is to have a racially diverse work environment that properly reflects the diversity of its customers in the USA and around the world. But matter over mind, reality is a different universe from the written or spoken word. Words fly easily and are swallowed by the ether, while diversity remains a debatable question and it’s not properly reflected in the workforce markets, especially not at Google.
They are now trying to fix the diversity problem. On Monday the company released a progress report and declared that there is still very much work to be done in order to have a racially and gender diversified work environment.
Latino workers make up only 3% of the entire amount of workers and black people can be found in less than 2% inside Google structures.
A notable progress has however been made in support of women, with Google increasing the number of female representatives working for the tech giant by 1% since last year, in the technical field. Also, a slight increase has been observed in the number of women occupying leadership positions, this year with 1% more women playing the role of bosses in the tech giant’s organizational structure.
However, in terms of total population, holders of technology jobs and leaders at the company didn’t show signs of emerging diversity. The white race, with emphasis on men, is still privileged when it comes to jobs and important positions inside the company.
Even though Google spends zillions in promoting diversity at the workplace, it’s more a question of marketing than a real life situation, as results don’t reflect the greatness of their investment. It seems that companies find it quite difficult to raise the barriers of diversity, even though the tech giant spent $115 million on diversity initiatives last year only, with percentages of variety growing at a really slow pace over the years.
