- Donald Trump believed climate change is a hoax invented by China.
We all know that Trump declared at some point that climate change is a hoax, without taking into consideration the scientific proofs that exist. Moreover, he promised to revive the gas, coal and oil industries. Many scientists have combated his beliefs, arguing that fossil fuel consumption is warming our planet, determining the rise of sea levels and triggering the formation of powerful storms.
Julia Olson, the lead counsel for the plaintiffs, stated that this group consisting of 21 students named Trump a defendant in their two-year-old case to make sure litigation will continue even if American has now a new administration. Even if this is only a procedural substitution, young activists claimed that they were determined to act upon this problem due to Trump’s disbelief regarding the science behind global warming.
Aji Piper, a 16-year-old activist, stated that he did not lose his hope and continued to believe that their case will help prevent bigger disasters which may be inflicted by the current president of the United States. The lawsuit was filed back in 2015 in a federal court in Oregon, being bound to allege that the response of the government concerning global warming has been ineffective, violating the constitutional rights of the youth activists.
The lawsuit demonstrates that the US together with many executive agencies are aware for over fifty years that the carbon dioxide emitted after burning fossil fuels is slowly altering the climate system, endangering humanity. Olson pointed out that America is responsible for climate change, this being one of the most significant cases in the world.
Besides Trump’s terrible statements regarding climate change, people became even more concerned when Scott Pruitt was named the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency. He continued to alarm people expressing his doubts regarding the whole global warming problem. Michael Gerrard, the director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University in New York City, noted that this case sent a very powerful political message.
