NASA Intends to Deliver a Robotic Craft to the Sun in 2018

NASA will sent a robotic craft to the sun in 2018 to collect more data about the solar corona.

NASA announced a new plan which consists of sending a robotic craft to the Sun in 2018. The Solar Plus Probe will most likely approach the sun at about four million miles away from the surface, confronting excessive radiation and heat. NASA scientists are hopeful, wishing for the probe to collect data which could reveal more about the mysteries of our star’s corona.

  • NASA is bound to send the Solar Plus Probe into space to analyze the sun in 2018.
  • Researchers are looking forward to obtaining more data about the corona of the sun.
  • The corona, the core of the sun, is known to be less hot than the rest of the star.

Specialists indicated that this unstable corona, the big hole in the heart of the Sun, is thought to be cooler compared to the rest of the star’s atmosphere. Nevertheless, they did not reveal an explanation for this. This could also be the man spot where the solar wind, mass ejections, and flares may develop, all reaching our planet’s atmosphere.

Researchers have been studying this for more than fifty years, struggling to unveil the impact of space weather events could have on Earth. Scientists hope that this mission deployed by the robotic craft Solar Plus Probe will help them determine how these phenomena occur and how we could prepare in case of eventual threats.

A new study developed by the National Academy of Sciences has suggested that if we do not receive an advance warning, a massive solar weather event could cause damages of at least two trillion dollars in the US alone. What is more, the eastern seaboard of America may remain without power for a year. NASA stated that they are bound to send this spaceship to the Sun to bring new information about the corona of the Sun and to protect us from eventual threats.

The primary goal of this mission is to track the energy flow and reveal more about the heating of the solar corona. Moreover, scientists also want to analyze what fuels the solar winds. The Solar Plus Probe is bound to provide a statistic regarding the outer corona of the sun. Researchers indicated that this mission has three objectives. One of them is to trace the energy flow which accelerates and heats the solar wind and solar corona.

If this goal is acquired, then scientists will be able to establish the dynamics and structure of the magnetic fields and plasma at the sources of the solar wind. The robotic craft will also explore the mechanisms which transport and accelerate energetic particles.
